Raising healthy, happy kids is no easy task, which is why Dean Clinic is again joining forces with area educators and community leaders for Parent University.

The 2014 Parent University will take place March 15 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Rome Corners Intermediate School, at 1111 S. Perry Parkway in Oregon.

Parent University is free for families with kids of all ages.

This year's event will include workshops and lectures on:

  • Parenting the love and logic Way for all ages
  • Bullying behavior and what to do
  • What can alcohol do to my teen's brain?
  • Navigating the medical Internet
  • Sports injuries: Prevention and care

Dr. Zorba Paster will deliver a keynote presentation at 9:30 a.m. His Dean Clinic-Oregon Family Medicine partners Dr. Joanna Bisgrove and Dr. Laura Mendyk will also be presenting throughout the morning.

Workshops and open dialog between parents and presenters help shine a light on the important role educators, primary care providers and other community leaders have in raising healthy, happy kids.

"Raising healthy, intelligent and well-rounded children is a team effort between primary care providers, parents, school educators and community leaders,” Bisgrove said. "It's that 'it takes a village to raise a family' philosophy."

Mendyk said the workshops allow her to get more face time with the community.

"I often feel that I don't have time to discuss all of the issues involved with normal development during an office visit," Mendyk said. "This is a chance to ... connect with parents who live in Oregon and the surrounding communities."

Parent University is a free event focused on school-aged families, but families of any age are welcome to attend.

Advance registration is encouraged. Onsite childcare is available to families who register in advance. To register, go to www.oregon.k12.wi.us or call 608-835-4097.
